The term 'Lipstick Lesbian' is used to describe women who display signs of being lesbian usually in a public place for attention, when in actual fact in the privacy of their own company have no sexual desires for each other, it was merely a show. I appologise if you feel in any way that these comments were describing yourself, if you read back my posts you will see that it was a direct pointer to Tv progs only and individuals were never at any stage mentioned. The confussion was only started when Sexipussi stated she was annoyed at 'fake lesbians' as she was a 'real lesbian' and found it hard enough without fakes. This naturally caused confussion as she was in a straight relationship, and by her own classifications of 'real lesbian' it was presumed she meant 'lesbian' as in the not 'bi' sense. This matter was cleared up once she explained that she was infact, and considered herself to enjoy sexual relationships with both male and females, thus meaning that she was not lesbian but bi.

At no stage through this thread did i state, or even imply that i viewed bi women as fake lesbians, this was an inferrence on your part only. A bi women is a women who enjoys sexual relationships with both women and men, a fake lesbian is a women who only pretends to like this- a big difference i think., and it is this pretence which causes offence- not true feelings or a natural expression of ones desire that we are all entiltled too.

Because it's just a classification. It's stigmatising and putting a lable on who we are and what we do. It doesn't make me or anyone else more or less of a person because we are gay, straight, bi, alien whatever. We're still the same inside. Classifications are important, classifications are required for a number of reasons. If we did not class ourselves male or female for example then we would have unisex changing rooms at schools, this is problamatic straight away on a number of ethical issues re privacy. Plus we would not have well women clincs that are geared at improving the health of a 'classification', funding would not be allocated to specific 'classifications' that have been shown to be in the highest need.

Classifying sexual preference is important too. If we did not do it, then we would not have the service inplace to deal with the problems that face us when dealing with sexuality. If for example it was decided never to consider someone gay, then when this person has major mental health issues due to his feelings on acceting his gay status where will he go? No specialst 'gay' advice would be given as we are no longer to classify. You can not seriously argue for funding for a young gay help group if you have already stated that we have no 'gay' classification. We need to have a need to provide a service.

Classification and stigmatisation are two seperate things, stigma is a negative label of someone for a myriad of reasons, put on a classification by individuals who do not understand the situation, usually for an undesirable quality or feature such as disability. For example an individual could be classified as HIV Positive, and then society would add the stigma off sexual promiscuity onto this classification. The problem is not with classification but with stigma. It has never been suggested in any of my posts that i put stigma on any sexual grouping, merely adressed sexual classification.

I feel it is also important to point out that many individuals like to consider themselves as part of a classification, as it gives them a sense of belonging. Many individuals like to have a name, as it helps them to make sense of what they are. It would be very confusing for someone who is trying to identify who and what they are without a starting point.
