asian cinema / films

righto this week i've mostly been 'obtaining' films from the far east...

monday started off with battle royale (doh, didn't realise it was on c4), was pretty good but not as good as i expected.

tuesday was 'hero', now i liked this one a lot...a beautiful film, top fighting and good story.

tonights going to be either lady snowblood or my sassy girlfriend..or iche the killer if he's ready

also in the pipeline are god of gamblers and musa...

anyone got any other reccomendations? I know the above are all mainstream, it's just that they are easily accessible (as in getting hold of)...which helps any genre as long as it's good..

Mine are probably more main stream than yours mate but anything by the Sensi - Akira Kurosawa takes some beating.

Not all his films are action though and a lot of them are based on shakespeare....Quality filmage though. His best and most famous being 'Seven Samurai' which is bloodyyyyyyyyyyyyy long but is a great film. Its up there in film snobs 'top 10 films of all time' kinda thing...Been fecked by Hollywood as well thousands of times in one guise or another...

For out and out blood fest/action - John Woo before he hit Hollywood is always bang on! 'Die xue shuang xiong' (The Killer) is shit hot.

How long have you got? lol

(these are all emule network friendly)

Ichi The Killer (amazing, I loved this) - Also get 1-Ichi (the prequel - again awesome stuff)

Takashi Miike's films are ace, he's a stunning director, and one that likes to push things, new directions aplenty, check out more of his films:

Dead Or Alive
Audition
Dead or Alive 2: Birds
Visitor Q (really sick!)
The Happiness of the Katakuris (amazing, a musical horror/comedy affair)
Dead or Alive Final
Gozu (so surreal you'll think you're tripping!)

Some other films by other directors:

Jisatsu Circle (Suicide Club)
Ju-on (do not get Ju-on - the grudge, as that was a shit remake)
Yin shi nan nu (Eat Drink Man Woman)
Returner
Over The Rainbow

(coupla words on some of those films here)

Takeshi Kitano - Sonatine, Brother, Violent Cop, Kikujiro (I really liked this, won at Cannes I think). Get Brother first it's half in English and will break you in gently.

If you like Anime, and have nephews, nieces etc try castles in the sky, Totoro, Spirited Away anything by Miyazaki.

There's a good un called Ghost in the Shell as well, which is a bit like Blade Runner I seem to remember.

There's a classic series of Yakuza (Japanese Mafia) films I watched whe I lived in Japan and they were quality, but fecked if I can remember the name-if it comes to me will let you know.

They aren't just good, most of them are fan-fookin-tastic fella.

As the directors don't use the regular cliched stuff that the english/amercian directors do, and it's great to see other peoples cultures.

Should give them a go mate, don't be blinkered and think "ugh subtitles, that ain't for me, pah" you'd be surprised how easy it is after a while of reading/watching the film, how easy it is
