Think you've answered yourself there with the bits I've bolded.

I thought it was quite a deep film, excellent perfomances all round, and at times it was so vivid, I actually felt like I was there with them, fully experiencing the full-on emotions in two of the key scenes.

My advice would be to not give up on a film, see it through to the end, then think about it, as often things start to make sense after you've seen it and had time to digest it.
