avatars or signatures???? u decide

ok heres what id like to do as were movin to a new nifty as hell server..............

id like to change it so we can only have avatar images instead of images in the signature as we presently have (an avatar is a small image under ur username (ie my yellow bloke smilin) now the benefits of this wud b meaning a lot faster loading pages for u lot as at the mo with everybody having images in there sig they are pretty hefty in both dimensions and file size which means that it not only slows down page loadin times but makes pages larger to scroll down. i will still keep signatures allowed on posts but text only (and not the bible writtten on it or out a few lines max) and then have the avatars enabled n peeps can thru ur user cp) can upload ur own images to our servers (so wud save the faffin about we have at the mo n all gettin peeps signature piccies hosted)

n e ways its up 2 use lot what happens we either go 4 avatars no images only in sigs. or stik as we r with images in sigs n no avatars

lol but if were on a quick as hell new server i know id rather have pages loading at a silly quick speed rather than images at bottom of posts but the board aint just mine is it so thats y i put a poll up n will go whichever way it swings. maybe ya shud look at makin text avatars for peeps if it happens

Do you mean that our sigs will be under the username on the left instead at the foot of the post ? Are we restricted by size for these avatars ? Can we use our old ones - will they be migrated across ? If not where can we select/create new ones ? Who's hosting them ?

yes mate it means it will be under the username to the left (where my evil bastard lookin yellow thing is) the dimensions will be limited to nearly twice the size of the yellow fella and the size will be limited to around max 15-20k (way enuff for the sorta size) ya wont b able to use ya old ones coz in part most of em r way to big both in size n in dimensions and so it wud mean sortin summet else - there is lots of sites out there that have avatars on (u have seen sum of em ive used the past few months) and if it goes ahead il b on a mission findin as many as poss as i can so peeps have got a choice or they can design/up there own which will be upped thru the user cp to the database which means they wont need hosting as theyl b on r server (which the admins feed speed every day)

its up 2 u guys at the end of the day ive been on a site with the avatars n no sigs n i can tell ya the forums fly - if they didnt make a crazy diffrence i wudnt even be suggestin . the problem u get ya see is sigs r hosted on diffrent peeps webspace n that diffrent peeps webspace vary in speed ya see n also the height of sigs all add up n if uve got a page of 15 posts all with decent sized sigs then its a lot more scrollin.

me personally i like avatars as id just have me butty one that sweet made me if it goes ahead coz its small n erm it is me innit like if u had 1 id suggest a small mr tickle init the same as u have now but diffrent. like i say tho i know peeps have spent time designin em n i know peeps like there sigs but ive also seen the diffrence it makes runnin it the other way and so thats y i thought it was only fair to give youse lot the option innit

now this guy is on exaclty the same new server were moving to and he doesnt have sigs on but has avatars and text in sigs and u can see the difference in speed.

I suppose if it means the board is faster for everyone, then it's for the better...

thats the perfick size id have mate as a mximum as it wud still fit in the column as it is now and also it is under 15k

what dimensions is that mate? n e ways that is what id set it to maximum of it went ahead. 2 b honest tho i dont think it will go ahead the usual suspects aint seen the post yet n i know how much they like there sigs alls fair in love n war tho innit its ur board aswel as mine

butty, is it not possible to make it so that your sig only appears in the first posy you do of any thread..

i.e you've posted 10 times in the same thread but your sig is only in the first post you made..save having the same sigs repeated over and over in the same thread..

might not cut down much regarding downloading as the images are cached but would make the threads easier on the eye..and easier to read..

aye mate there is a hack out there that wud do that but there currently nearly completeed makin the next version of the board and so id b stupid to go bangin on n e more hacks as when the new one gets released they wudnt work n e ways innit

Personaly I like having the sigs. I just think it makes us look diffrent, and more appeling than other forums

If we start to look like all the other forums, I think we will attract less new members to the board

Thats my oppinion, but if every one else would like to go with the other method, its ok by me

I'd rather just have avatars but since the vote seems as its going the otherway how about doing what they do on another forum I use, which is you upload your sig to the forum server and theres a strict image and kb size so the page loading times aint crippled for us 56kers.

if it does go that way mate then yeah il bang sigs on the same server as the forum and get me sig ruler out n get peeps to change big uns. it stil wud b much quikker with avatars i rekon n at the mo its dead even innit so it could go either way - we do have to look at sig sizes if it goes the keepin sig image sizes way as whats the poin tin havin a blisterinly quik server if the rest of it aint blisterinly quik innit
