What the bloody hell??????????

Right, any PC boffins about??. I hope this posts this time - its a two parter!...

1) My computer is taking AGES & AGES to start, infact its not starting. Its been 6 hours now and I cant get in, so I am currently on my Bro's PC whilst he's out......which leads to question 2;

2) I sign in to a forum (here or anywhere else or email accounts etc) and it looses the fact I have logged in, so I cant post. Everytime I log in on the forum (on my brothers pc) I log in, see a post I wanna reply to and then it says you have to register to post - when im already logged in..........so I fill in the details again and then it says the thread Im replying to doesnt exist.......then I click the big OSA banner to get back to the front and Im not logged in again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHH. Its pure flook if this works now.

As for Question 1, the pc is an AMD 850 running Windows 2000 server edition linked via network rj45 lead to my brothers pc whose is the 'master'. It took ages to sort out the link because of something to do with us both running 2000 server versions of windows. We use 'wingate' to connect us, he has the modem on his machine. Its been working fine (including internet connection sharing) until yesterday.

Everytime I start my PC it boots up and says 'preparing network connections' for say 2 hours, then I get my windows log in box which I fill in and click OK. This then says 'applying your settings' for hours on end!. Cant get in the fekking thing it just sits there.

Perhaps if I wait long enough it may come on, but fek me, it been 4 hours Ive waited this time and still nothing. I have kept trying 'reset' button on my case all day after say an hour, but this time Ive left it to see what happens.........

I can get in on 'safe' mode by pressing f8, but I dont know whats wrong to fix it - so thats no real use to me.

Any ideas???.

hmmm.. using wingates it pretty crap way of doing it and sounds like its your problem... you can't connect 2 pc's with an RJ45... You need a crossover cable... basically a RJ45 with the wires wired opposite to each other. If you don't have a crimping tool then Maplins will do you one for fesk all.

Or get yourself a ethernet hub... PC World do em for around £30- £40. Even better.. get yourself a fancy adsl switch for around £150 that has a built-in firewall, 5 port hub and dhcp and lots more including a adsl modem (thats gonna be my next purchase).

The forum problems could be due to the cookie policy on your machine. Go to Internet Options and click on the privacy tab... there should be a scroll bar, scroll it down to "accept all cookies".

Cheers. I cant find a setting to 'allow all cookies' anywhere. Theres just an option to allow them for specific sites (which u have to type in). I smurf about a fair lot, so inputting all these in is gonna be a right pain.......hes also got his PC like fort knox, I "do not have permission" to make any settings, which really peeves me off!!!.

I may have to wait till my bro' comes in tomorrow, I may leave my PC on all night to see if the fekking thing is on when I wake up!.

Believe me, he is fairly apt at Pc stuff (being a computer programmer) and has tried all sorts to get us linked 'normally'. Apparently the Server Edition works differently to all the other windows in this respect. In fact I think theres an automated process in winME and 2000 proffesional or something.

I dont know much about networking, perhaps Ive got the lead name wrong - its a telephone type thing, but he did nick a spare lead from work which they all use as networking - so perhaps it is the one you mentioned and not a rj45.
Wingate was recommended by somebody as a last ditch attempt at joining us together and has so far worked for two weeks perfect, but I dont know why no-one has mentioned hardware like you suggested........Ill takle him about it tomorrow!.........

Im assuming the problems on my PC are because of this wingate/linking, but theres all this DOS stuff to do probably which leaves me baffled. Anyways, Ill have to get him to sort it out.

Thanks again, Ill see what happens tomorrow. He never explains anything to me properly, so when stuff like this happens I havent a friggin clue what to do.

Cheerio,

Sirius.

bugger me. Its finally started. Its only taken going on **5* *hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .

Gonna do some system checks (duno what tho) and perhaps install some anti virus stuff just in case its sommet nasty and not wingate or sommet. Then maybe Ill get some sleep - leving it on would keep the whole house up cos my pc sounds like a hoover!!!!!!!!!!!!. Infact im supprised it didnt come with standard regulation earplugs to comply with health and safety requirements!.

Thats sommet else that peeeves me off......the vibration and noise it makes on the desk (worktop) stops me recording my vinyl on my pc - the needle on the record amplifies the low humming/bass rumbling 10 fold!!!. having no room to reorganise leaves me without much choice though.

See y'all

Sirius

if the hub.... or cross over * spits * hasn't fixed your problem then try setting domains as Primary for your brother, and secondary for you.... and all of a sudden life will be peachy

The reason it is taking to long is because the networks are "babbling" and hence not listening to each other......

Good luck... yelp if you need help

Thanks for replying .

Im afraid I need to be told like Im 5 years old!!!.

Are you meaning making his the 'master' and mine 'slave' (like in linking MIDI Gear), cos this is wot hes done now.....or is this primary and secondary something else?.

He never tells me wot hes doing so I can never sort it myself, then he huffs and puffs cos I keep whinging at him to sort it out!.
He does some stuff in dos/command prompt which Im afraid would leave me useless.

We still dont have linked network or connection sharing, but whilst hes out Ive decided to 'sack it off' and have unplugged the adsl modem from his machine and set it up on mine!. Im fed up with all the hassle on his machine.........but face major kick off when he gets home tomorrow .

I got my 'puter to start by going into 'safe' mode and selecting 'last known sucessful boot'. Its shagged the network in between us, but it had stopped working anyway.

Ill pass the info on to my bro when he gets back.

Thanks again,

Paul.
