Running ICQ behind a firewall

Any of you successfully run ICQ behind a packet filtering device?

I'm having a mare when it comes to file transfers. Reading all the ICQ stuff and a few other sources I've learned that I need to restrict the range of dynamic ports that ICQ will listen on.

So I allow 4000 - 4006 TCP through my firewall. I've configured my client to use these ports. In another document I discovered that ICQ uses UDP 4000... so I let this through as well.

After doing all this I still can't transfer files. I found another fellow ICQ user who configured his firewall/client idenitical to mine.

We had the same the problems so I captured my local traffic to try and analyse the problem and discovered that ICQ is using whatever port it pleases, no matter what ports I tell it to use.

Maybe I'm missing something but has anyone come across this and fixed it? Has anyone got any good links for solving this problem?

I can currently only see two options open to me. Either get ICQ to use the ports I tell it to or stick in a IPChains firewall... anyone good with Linux and ADSL configuration? I can't seem to get ADSL to work with my 2.2 kernel. I know I should upgrade to 2.4 and I will soon, honest

Any help would be greatly appreciated cause I do not intend to disable my firewall for the sake of ICQ. Thanks for your help last night Doolz mate.. I owe you a beer.. oh wait a mo... your from the south so I'll make it a shandy

Cant help with the icq really but I've had the same problem sending stuff to people (generally ppl with fast connections) on icq and no matter what we tried it wont work but it allways seems to work with the same ppl on aim, so maybe you should give that a try as plenty of us use aim as well because u can choose a directory to share unlike in icq where u just share the icq shared file directory which is useless if like me u store your mp3s on a separate drive..

Well Fug's,I added u some 2 weeks ago now,not sure if u got the notice,I dont use firewalls...nor virus scanners...nuthin...media propeganda in my opinion, never had a problem...even after begging some bad arse dope down script rippen hacker MoFo's to teach me a binary lesson.
Firewalls kill the fun...they all conflict and bug out..I suggest turning it off...or pissing it off...but,add me when u can so I can send u a virus..err...I mean... hehe...

hehe

Aye mate.. not turned icq on for ages... will do tonight #

Its the firewalls like Norton, McAfee etc that cock it all up. Corporate butt rapers all of them. Instead of giving you a highly configurable firewall product they give you a piece of sh*t that does not want you to use the Internet... you go to hell, you go to hell and you die !!!!!

I'm looking a purchasing a rather snazzy adsl switch/router/firewall... its £150 spondoolies but it should sort my problem out as the firewall is actuall a version of iptables All will be good again

LMAO @ binary lessons Why did you want binary lessons? Did they show you 2's compliment binary addition? hehe.

No virus scanner, no firewall... whats your IP mate I see a new BO2K server appearing soon

Catch you on ICQ laters
