HDTV's

Does anyone know the ins and outs of these bloody things lol ????

What should I be looking for when it comes to contrast ratio, luminosity/brightness, resolution, progressive scan, etc, and why is that a Phillips set that costs over a grand has the exact same figures under everyone of those specifications as a £299 Acoustic Solutions set from Argos

this is the same set as what I have - http://www.play.com/Electronics/Elec...V/Product.html

i dont know much about the ins & outs of these tellys - i just know they are fab!

That looks like a quality tv but I don't really wanna get anything smaller than what I've got now so it's gonna have to be a 32" or more.

Was panicing coz I've just bought an Xbox 360 and didn't think any of the games I got with it would be playable coz my tv is 50hz and the games are 60hz. Thankfully they were ok so now I can wait until the January sales to splash out on a new tv

Panasonics are widely renowned as being the best hdtvs at this point in time for picture quality and reliablity. My mate has worked in a privated audio visual shop for a few years now and the panasonic viera range are generally thought of as the best value for money.

Ive done my own research tho and i havent seen a bad word said about the panasonic vieras yet.

Heres a freebie for anyone wanting a hdtv. MY mate gave it me.

Go to Panasonic : Plasma and LCD TVs (pansonics online shop)

Chose which tv you want and when youve gone to checkout there will be an option to put a promotional voucher in. In the box write 3M0608 and that gives you 25% off.

Watch out for HD Ready and Full HD...

HD Ready - will only display up to 720p
Full HD - Maximum resolution 1080p picture looks like the dogs bollocks

Since HD movies are in 1080p, you're gonna be downconverting the signal if you only have a "HD Ready" telly. Spunk the extra cash, you know you want to!

Yeah, it is a bit... Don't get me wrong though, a 720p display is gonna be loads better than a bog standard picture, but obviously the more pixels the better.

I looked into this loads a while back when I was looking for a new telly / monitor. I ended up getting a 24" monitor with a native resolution of 1920x1200 - which is what my pc outputting at. Then the PS3 is outputting at 1920x1080 (over HDMI), so I have two thin black bands top and bottom which are hardly noticeable, but I figured that was better than getting a 24" telly and running my pc through that at 1280x720 which would have been poo.

This pic might help understand the relative difference in picture size between normal telly, HD Ready and Full HD. Sorted.

HD ready does not mean only 720p

HD ready can mean a hell of alot nowadays, it all started when sky changed thier minds about what hhz frequency they where going to use when they started HD broadcasts.ie can a set display a picture at 720p and 1080i at both 50 and 60 hhz .

as for the 1080p there is no broadcast in this country it is only 1080i and 720p

all a tv will do if it is 1080p is turn the interlaced signal into a progresive one.

sky HD broadcasts are at 720p and 1080i both at 50hz

some tvs are not classed at full HD because they are set at 720p at 60hz but will display 1080i at both 50/60 hz

some tvs are not full full HD because they will not display all res at all hz through all digital connections ie hdmi dvi component which is actualy analoge

a progressive picture is better than an interlaced one with a progressive picture the full screen is refreshed all in one go.

interlaced only intermitent lines are refreshed.

but because there are more lines with a 1080i than a 720p some say inclueding me that the 1080i pic is better.

but if you buy a set that has 1080p you have cutting edge technology there is no better available, but as i said it is only de interlacing the incoming signal.
