Internet Sharing......

Okay......

We have just got broadband at work. Its a BT wireless connection, which the manager has upstairs in his office as the master computer for the modem/connection.

It is linked to us on the offices across the building via a USB stick style wireless reciever jobby.

They are only installing it on one PC, which is classed as the Server. Its running Windows2000 Server Professional, and me and my colleague are file sharing to each other and the server over RJ45 type network cables......

.....Is there a way I can now (on the relative sly), set up internet connection sharing from the server's USB wireless connection, over the networking cables to our computers?. If so, is there anything I need to get or know? How would it be done.....Im familiar with the XP home networking wizzard, but Im not sure how to go on with win2000, or what I may need to 'set up' as being the type of connection (LAN, etc).

Plus, I cannot be sure how well monitored activity will be....I simply wont have the time to be sat Idling away the day like others on here ( ), but I would like to use it at break times and dinner times, MSN chat and such like.........but I would prefer it if there was a simple way to kind of mask my conversations or limit snooping lol.

I have acess to passwords on the server, and am known to tinker about, so that side of it wont be a problem.

Plus, will I need a firewall and Antivirus on the computers if I do/can share the connection?

Eaiest way to be un detected would be to connect wirless router directly bypassing the server. You will need the WEP key to connect which is usually on the underside of the BT routers .. Any other connection would need to go through the server as a share leaving you open to monitoring ..

The two other computers are via a regular 'fast ethernet' card, using the RJ45 cables.......can I use the 'set up wireless' connection on XP using this device? Or would I have to buy a USB wireless key.

I think I can get access to the MAC codes or WEP keys....

Theres no "connection" as such on the IBM server, its just got broadband via this wireless network link. On dialup you could ask it to 'share connection', you cant seem to do this with the current set up.

I agree though, wireless striaght to it would be great, but I dont know what to do or what I need.

You'll need a wireless jobber for yer workstation mate (unless it's a lappy with wireless built in) once you've got that in & configged you should ba laughing...

Aye it may well do but they the firewall on routers aint worth shyte, the fact they are NAT is the only protection you need at router level, best bet is a solid state dedicated haredware firewall, im a partner of Sonicwall uk, and they are top sausage routers with half arse firewalls are just another thing to maintain and can be a pain in the batty when dealing with bizniz, jsut disable the firewall aspect and you will notice a rise in perfomance and the same level of security

First of all get that usb modem OFF the server m8, its not secure first and foremost, that machine is exposed to attack due to the fact it is going straight out on a live IP addy!

For wireless kit steer clear of BT shyte, ive been working in the trade as a network and data security specialist for over 10 years and have never seen such a waste of plastic, Get a Dlink 624t Wireless Adsl modem/router, has a 4 port switch built in, id cat5 patch the server into the switch, then use 2x USB Wireless network cards for the workstations. Setting up a wep key is a piece o pish, is done through the wireless setup via the routers web interface.

If you wanted m8 i can even supply and pre configure the blighter and ship it to you, alls you would need to do is plug it in and away you go.

However, Im in no authority to say anything and the things already been bought and installed.

Im sure the installation guys have set up the basic safeguards for it being 'free range', and they are using the router firewall, and I think we have software firewalls aswell.

The bosses computer may be all secured up, the the wireless nailed down (encrypted or whatever they do) using the MAC and KEY numbers etc.

This PC Im on now is linked to 4 or 5 computers via RJ45, but the wireless broadband comes though the USB key from upstairs on the bosses computer.

I take it I cant tunnel through the RJ45's to recieve connection over the hardline network and will have to, at my own expense, buy a wireless key similar to that already on this machine....

If one of the machines your linked too through the switch has the internet connection i can talk you through setting up internet connection sharing, which will allow the machine connected to the wireless to share the connection via its ethernet network card, piece o pish
