| PC File xfer help needed (coz I iz fick) Got a new lappy of my very own (whooohooo ) so trying to pull over all personal stuff from my IBM T23 lappy onto me new IBM T42 lappy...Both are on XP (although the new one is 'proper' XP Home edition whereas the old one is an IBM version of XP called EClient). I've bought a cross-over ethernet type cable which I was assured by me local pooter shop would be ok for p2p file pulling... I tried to set up a local network between the 2 lappys using the XP wizard but to no avail.... ![]() Can anyone help me pwwwwwwease ? If anyone can or if I can can you so you can talk me thru it would be most appreciated Fanks in advance.

| Shooms lad, If youve got a Crossover cable give your laptops 2 IP addresses in the same subnet.. Feck the wizards off, they are shite, go directly to My Network Places-View Network Connections-Local Area Connection-Internet Protocol (TCP-IP) and change the setting from Automatic eg Laptop 1 is IP Address 10.1.1.1 Subnet Mask 255.0.0.0 Laptop 2 is IP Address 10.1.1.2 Subnet Mask 255.0.0.0 Once the IP has been defined they should be able to ping each other. If youre not sure, ping can be used in MSDOS ie ping 10.1.1.1 Then try and Map a Drive from one computer to the other |

| Oh and turn off any firewall software you are running, it will block apps like ping and telnet |

| Nice one Neil.... with you up to the point about mapping a drive lol ![]() I can ping n "see" the other machine... How do I map the drive...? I've found where to do it (tools) but don't know how to do it or what to search for .... \\??? etc ta fer yer help ![]()

| in the tools/map network drive bit let it give it its own letter then in the bit below stick in \\ip addy of other pc\C: or wherever u wanna transfer from and itll create a new drive in my computer |
