Fridge freezers.....honestly....lol

Right, this is gonna sound well strange but its pissing me off now........prolly the wierdest thread topic you'll ever find lol.

My mam has two freezers and everything gets rammed in choc full in no particular order. Now, when stuff has been in there for atleast a month stuff starts tasting really shite (to me) and either everybody else is being polite or thier taste buds are completely fekked. One freezer is really bad for it, the others not too bad. they are not old or disfunctional freezers, infact the one outside (the bad one) is only about 18 months old.

Like today, had some frozzen chips from the bad one (I didnt know they were from there so its not all in my mind) and they tasted of sammon, strawberry icecream and french bread pizza combined and I had to leave them all before I gagged. Nobody else seems to notice or care......

Am I going mad? I dont think so. I know so. But has anyone else any bad freezer tasting situations or know of any sites which can prove my sanity?.
I think its the strong flavour/smell of the other stuff which gets into water droplets and freezes into surrounding foods in the freezing process....then when stuff gets moved around it happens again and when its thawed out the amalgamation of flavouring in the ice is soaked into the chips and then cooked up tasting like satans spleen.
Its not me, cos everything else I have tastes pukka, its only the occasional frozen stuff which I cant even entertain eating.

lol. Im not joking, Im serious.

I wonder if Mjaxx will know.

Cheers

Sirius.

Sounds like some serious cross contamination going on here .

First of all are the freezers the correct temp should be below -15 deg C for starters otherwise the food will only be partially frozen and you will get ingress of moisture from one food to another.

Secondly the food should be in sealed containers if the original packing has been opend .

Thirdly your freezer should be defrosted and disinfected / cleaned once a month as reccomended byu the food standards agency.

And last but not least dont fall into the popular misconception that once it goes in the freezer it can stay there until you decide to eat it , there should be guidelines on the food packing on how long you can keep the food in the freezer for , if it's in longer than that it can start to go mankey ...

Cheers m8.

I dont think Im going mad and 'imagining it' like my mam says lol.

Now, I therefore need to check its at -15 degrees somehow, then ensure stuff is properly sealed (I think stuff like chips are just rolled up, sometimes with a peg on).

The one outside is a deep cabinet type one with no shelves, so stuff can be in there for a long time....

Errm, the trouble will be telling my mum how to run the freezers

Im gonna suggest putting similar things in the same drawers in the inside freezer to....I dont mind vanilla icecream tasting a bit chocolaty, but sammon and strawberry sprout flavour chips is not good.

Thanks for the reply (how did you know this stuff!!), Im glad its possible in theory and Im not insane .

As RJ says a good freezer should be at -18ºc or less. Secondly a peg on yer chip bag just doesnt cut it m8, I used have a similar problem all the time, you need some hermetic containers or better still a "food saver" vacuum device..like this one :

http://www.tilia.com/

These things are the dogs bollox and you can vacuum seal anything in them from food to clothes to..well anything...even those rare bits of vinyl

Another tip would be prior to putting things in the freezer (Im talking frsh to freeze stuff here) leave them in the fridge for a while before sticking them in the freezer, that will stops any unwanted condensation coming off them and messing with yer other goodies
