No. Cable tends to be presented via Co-Ax (a screw-in connection not unlike telly aerial cable) whereas ADSL is presented via your phone line. That's the "modem" part of the device.

The rest (router/switch/wireless etc.) is the same regardless.
The netgear range (and most of the others) pretty much chuck all these devices in one box to keep it neat and simple.
If you're not sure, I would have a read on the tech suppotr forums of your ISP. There are bound to be people who've switched modems and will recommend kit for you

As for the 54/108 connection issues, I was under the impression that this was fixed by flashing firmware. Either in the Netgear wireless hub itself, or the device which is communicating with it.
108Mbps is basically 2 x 54Mbps channels bonded together.
There were problems with early 108Mbps devices because of inefficiencies across both (54M) channels in parallel, but I thought these had been resolved some time ago.
